Los Angeles bans plastic bags from Ian Simon

For environmentalists, 1977 could be a year that lives in infamy. That's the year the plastic grocery bag was introduced. At that time the brown paper bag was dominant for sacking groceries. Now, in 2012, 90 percent of all grocery bags are plastic. About 100 billion bags are used annually worldwide.
Los Angeles was contributing with an estimated 2.7 billion plastic grocery bags per year. But that's going to end. Last week, Los Angeles became the largest city in the nation to ban plastic bags at supermarket checkout lines. They will be phased out during the next 16 months and shoppers will have to bring their own reusable bags or purchase paper bags for 10 cents each. More Source or Visit Ian Simon
